Well after 6-8 hours on 14 (where the chars I am building now are being quested) I think I will wait until after this contest thingy is over to resume. The new critters there (undead apparently) do not dispel, very few spells work on them, and they do not fight down quickly enough to not get beat up pretty badly. My chars are well equipped and I was doing fairly well at my pace on 14 before this event started so I think I will sit it out. I don't chase dangling carrots very well anyway. Have fun everyone!

I have taken to just avoiding halloween encs deep. Very tough and drop that gives 1 hit drops once out of 7 or 8 fights. I think i will just run and not risk comp.

Special encounters are 1) rare. 2) only in the traditional dungeon.

So special areas and add on spaces (like 11a) are free from Trick or Treaters and their ilk.

I put this in as a fun but challenging event. If it turns out not to be wanted, I can certainly scale it back, or just turn it off.

I ran 15 for two brief runs. I ran into bedsheet ghosts (they went down pretty fast) and some sort of patch servants and the great pumpkin.

Of course my party is advanced. So that may explain a lot.

Steve,

There are alternative areas of 14 that should be critter free. Go hit the portals. Or not.

I checked the production files, and there were some discrepancies with what was on test server. mostly these were minor, but there were many... I most likely loaded the wrong files on production. I have not had a chance to check production, other than to know that the correct files are all there now.

I suggest you try again. Things like the items should actually be working, and reflect the values I was using on test. (2 charges instead of one, for example.)

I had tweaked the monsters towards upper levels on the encounter tables, but I think I had an earlier copy of the monsters (when they were harder) still loaded. So you may find them a bit easier... but it is going to be 10-20% reduction in toughness. Not 33% easier.

These values can all be tweaked if needed. I am shooting for fun but challenging. Not a Halloween give away. Let me know what you are finding in the game.

FYI:

I just discovered that "spectral blast" hits Coven of Witches quite well.
The numbers of encounters appears to be way down.

OK Will revisit soon, probably early tomorrow morning. I got volunteered for an important recording project in my community which will take a few more weekdays to wrap up. Thanks for the tip on SB Jake. It was one to spells I had been trying. Sounds like it will be more effective now.

Rather than detailing my visit to 14 this morning, I will just state that it is my opinion that the special event encounters you have in place on lvl 14 are overpowered for my well equipped level 460-514 group. May I suggest that the special event be restricted to special areas instead of the regular dungeon as there are several of those scattered about, that way those who wish to participate may do so without disrupting their regular level-making/quest hunting. Here is a novel idea! How about making all the special event encounters peaced? I think I will just stick to masochistic activities which do no worse than put blisters on my fingers for the next few weeks. Don't get me wrong, my sense of adventure is still intact, I'm just not suicidal.
No harm - no foul as the saying goes. I play a more conservative style than most other players (I tried fitting in once when I was younger -- and ran into a wall) and this event is just not filling my desire for diversionary fun.
Best of fortune everyone! Back after Halloween.

See you in November.

Hey, what time does the Christmas bash get going this year? I am sure that will be another event that some folks won't want to participate in.

I ran 14 (mainly) and 15 for about 3 hours last night.

Witch Coven is hard to kill-- but easy to avoid. In 3 hours I ran into them 4 times.
Bedsheet ghosts seemed a bit more common on 14, but rare on 15.
Headless Horseman is about as common on 14 as the ghosts-- but he seems to drop pretty fast.
Zombie Packs are pretty common -- but they burn pretty well and seem to cary large amounts of exp and cash.

My only complaint-- stop being so stingy with the special drops. I have only 1 GPS to show for taking down 10-15 Great Pumpkins since you started.

I would say you need to double the drop rate from these mobs, but a 50% increase would at least be a step in the correct direction.

Another update:

Ran about 3 hours in the middle of the night (couldn't sleep) and then about an hour this morning before work....

Holiday Encounters appear to be so rare on 14/15 as to almost be a non factor. I don't run the upper levels, but I am finding 1 (tougher) encounter every third loop on 15 and usually about 1 easy encounter every loop. (on average)

I think you could turn up the density some. I found a set of "ruby slippers" on 15. I assume this is a holiday item. The use level is low, and the items appears to have little value to a char big enough to run on 15-- so why is it down here???

ruby slipper is a holiday item.
it is generally found higher up in the dungeon, but it is on some of the deeper tables as sort of a booby prize.  kinda like when you find a dagger and it turns out to be a whimper of death instead of a dagger of swiftness.

there are other holiday items lurking -- find them.  some are quite nice.

I hesitate to turn up the frequency of encounters, since some objected to them so strongly.

Don't take this the wrong way--

But some folks object to the holiday event, so you turn down the encounter rate to the point that the holiday mobs are almost not present at all. So why have a holiday theme at all? And why worry about what the non participating players think? They aren't playing, aren't going to play, having taken their ball and gone home... so why can't the rest of us enjoy what you obviously spent time creating for us????

I say turn up the rate to levels you think are good, and let the haters hate.

Face piles of trials with smiles. It riles them to believe that you perceive the web they weave, and keep on thinking free!
Walk a mile in another man's moccasins, that way if you still disagree, he is a mile away and barefoot!
Last but not least: Hate, much like fear, is a major tool of mankind's ancient adversary.

I feel fortunate that I still have many healthy choices of what to do with my free time. Life isn't all about instant gratification despite what our technology worshiping society teaches us. Have fun!

Associates. Friends. Ludites. Lend me your fears and ears. Unite now and overthrow the tyranny of the technocrats! Destroy the technology now, before they give you more free games to play! Next thing you know they'll be replacing our tin cans and string with cell phones and making popcorn in an infernal microwave device!!! Resist the siren call and return to our great agrarian past. Gather your pitchforks, its time to storm the computer-castle-complex.

Come on. This is off topic, and a wonderful example of what we DON'T want this forum to degenerate to.

I am locking this thread.
