RESOLVED: Lag in the evening

Post by ghard on Thu Sep 22, 2016 10:33 pm

I can't be certain it is not my connection, but lag starting around 10PM your time is very bad in the evening.  Makes it unplayable (the amount of lag) unfortunately.

Is this every evening? Or just certain evenings? How long does it last? Does it depend on # of users in the game? Not sure if this is on my end, but I do have certain tools I can use to check ping/latency on an hour by hour basis from the server.

We run pretty lean on bandwidth--I've spent a lot of time optimizing our protocol over the years. However, what happens with respect to web traffic in my neighborhood is anybody's guess.

Could it be something as simple as more people in my neighborhood firing up Netflix around 10 PM?

Javatar is currently being hosted on a cable modem. I have considered DSL as an option, as it has better upstream capacity. Thus far I haven't considered it a worthy additional expense.

You should be able to ping the server from your command prompt, and it should tell you the response time--that might be useful Intel for us to gather in this thread.

Thanks for posting about this.

It is the last couple evenings. Last night only me in, Steve was in one of those evenings so we can ping him.

What is your server name to ping? i will get ping details if i see it again. I doubt upstream is much of an issue with the amount of data going over the line, but it was not a small problem, it was an obvious big issue making it unplayable. If on your end should be something you can detect.

I am in the Pacific time zone. It does not happen every night/afternoon but when it does it is between 5pm and 7pm and as described, pretty much unplayable. Sometimes the connection drops completely, other times just a 15-30 second lag. I have noticed this in approximately the last 10 days/evenings. I hope this helps pinpoint the source of the issue.

So is it always a 15-30 second phenomenon? Or is it something that goes on for minutes, hours?

One thing it could be is the replenishment of our random # pool. Initially, I set things up to roll all the random #'s we use in a day at 2:00 AM. I thought 300,000 #'s would be enough.. but we are using a bit more than that on average. When we run out, the code looks to the serial port for more, and the server might be lagging out as the array is refilled. We have a ton of RAM on this beast, it's no problem for me to bump up the array size if this is truly the issue. (Or just code the replenishment routine in a way that doesn't affect our network traffic..)

I haven't noticed any slowdowns during the replenishment, but then again, I'm probably too close to the server to notice.

This should be an easy theory to test.

Cool. I could probably do with a router reset myself! Please keep me posted.
