just discovered today that Sphere/Doom is set the same way (spell does not break peace but sphere will).

What is wrong with spheres acting in this manner?

Items of this type are meant to augment the guilds natural abilities to cast a spell. A means of extending a run, without resorting to scrolls/tomes of spells. If the item has benefits not associated with the native spell (in this case being quicker to cast) then it becomes an item to use in place of the spell because it is better. That is not what these items are designed for. Other items that spring to mind are the rings/XXX and a few other offensive spell casters. Care must be taken so that a char equipped with such does not reach a level of function that is on par with a real caster. Otherwise everyone would be running Seekers with 500+ defense and casting burning air from their ring of XXX.

Did you mean previous versions of avatar (because there were several not just one)? If you cannot cast the spell when peaced (You get the message "Takes too long to cast when peaced") then why should an item which casts the same spell give you some advantage? Veteran players view this as an exploitable bug.
