Game Down? 2/11/18

Something happened with the internet here - had to reboot everything, now have internet, but can't get Javatar connection. Is the game down currently?

Man! I came back on this today, and game was up. My characters were scattered all over the dungeon, so I started getting my wiz and mage up, finding them, then getting everyone else rounded up. I was just getting the LAST character, my thief rounded up on 13, and in the middle of my displacement from the Wiz, the game froze again! Now it's down again. What's going on!

Hi Doc,

I rebooted the server around 8 PM last night after JP texted me to tell me that it was down. It looks like it crashed after that, and then came back up during the nightly reboot at 2 AM.

I don’t know the exact source of the error, but will try to narrow in on it. I will try running a cleanup routine today and see if that remedies the situation.

We are back up and running now. If it crashes again today, I have the server configured to tell me exactly what line of code it is crashing on, which should allow me to repair the problem..

It is down again - This MAY be coincidental, but the game has frozen with my Wizard throwing a displace to round up my last character each time, 3 times in a row.

Are we entering a new period of instability, or is this just a coincidence?

Doc, can you tell me where that last character is located, and/or the name of that character?

I had the server set in error detect mode, but when I came home to check it (just now) the server application closed out on me due to leftover keystrokes from remote desktop. If it errors out again this evening, I should be able to trap and correct the error tonight. So if you don't mind logging on one more time and repeating the sequence of events I should be able to fix it.

I will do so right now. The name of the Character is *Airjordans. He is throwing a displacement. I will do so now

Indeed! The character itself, *Airjordans is "glitched". It is not in throwing a displacement, but in any encounter. I logged on all my characters, and they were once again sundered, pell-mell, everywhere through the dungeon. I took *Airjordans only down to start teleporting and displacing to characters, and the first encounter he stopped to melee, crashed him. So, he is bugged. I logged him out in the middle of an encounter.

Hmm, what you did this time didn't crash the server though. It's still up.

I just logged in with *Airjordans. I did a displacement with him--no errors. I cleared a few encounters.. nada. I inspected his data in the operator lesson and couldn't find anything out of place. I changed his coordinates to the city steps, returned him (saved him to disk) there, and then left him in the city.

We have a lot of checks in place to find/correct bad data when it sometimes occurs, but I'm guessing that there are still a few places where the code needs to be bulletproofed. I'll keep an eye on my email--lemme know if you are having trouble with any other members of your party.

Yes, I'm very sorry but that was me Brad. Something one of my characters is doing seems to freeze the game. But don't worry, Jude is on it. (I was able to give him much more specific data today, so perhaps that can help him) - docriley

Just so everyone can see, here is what I texted Jude (or something close to this)

I came on about 8:20, and logged my characters in. Buster, Stilettos, and Highheels were still scattered in the dungeon. I took *Airjordans (my wiz) down with Steeltoes to get them. I landed from T-port on Buster on 11, and walked over to Highheels and got them. Stilettos was on 13, so I T-Ped from 11 to 13, to 7,5,13. My Mage showed Stilettos at 20,17 from 7,5,13 - so I punched in the coords to *Airjordans, and again, as last 4 times, he froze in the middle of the cast, freezing everyone else and the game. Very sorry this is me, not trying to do it on purpose, of course!

Ok, we’re back in error trapping mode. (Unfortunately it resets each evening so I did not trap the error this AM..) If you can find time today to repeat the error before around 9 PM this evening, I will log on to the server at home and try to grab the error.

Incidentally, whatever is going on is leaving the server in an endless loop. Sometimes I get an error and sometimes it just freezes. This should be an easy fix, once trapped.

So, you want me to go back on now and do it?

Ok - there is no doubt. Same exact sequence of events froze the game at 10:10. (*Airjordans displacing on 13 to get Stilettos - but I don't think it's that exact place, it did it in others) The error seems to be on *Airjordans

Ok--I just sat down to the server console, and found that the game was down due to an overflow error. I was surprised to find that the long integer that I have been using to keep track of the # of random numbers rolled in a single day was at capacity... I'm not quite sure how that happened, unless someone has been doing some *serious* running lately. Anyway, that line of code has been commented out, so I don't expect us to be hitting this overflow bug any time soon.

That said, the overflow bug (which has been squashed) was only one of two bugs that I have seen over the course of the week. Whether or not one bug led to the other is anybody's guess.. but I would not be surprised to see a bug related to movement. In other words, I may have just cured a side effect bug/symptom instead of the root cause. (I'm wondering if somehow a piece of the dungeon was inadvertently allowing a character to get stuck rolling a random number over and over for all eternity.. bogging down a CPU in such a fashion is not a good thing!)

Anyway, I will be investigating the specific area of the dungeon that Doc outlined in his notes above. In the meantime, I have returned ALL characters to the city steps for now.

I have left the server in 'error trapping' mode for the evening, in case you want to have another go at displacing in that area.

I have had the displace error occur on 7,8,11. I doubt it is based on a single char or a location in the dungeon. All of mine have happened after the party gets scattered by a random tp. Ring any bells with anyone else?

Around 7:28 pm UCT the game went down.  The five B boys had just dropped down the chute from 10 to 11 and Bagger blew a tp box.  Bugle cast a soul search and then a displacement and the game dropped during the displacement.

Thanks... game is back up (in error catching mode). All characters have been placed at the city steps.  I'm hoping to track down the root cause of this displacement issue in the mid dungeon.
